FAQ's

Your Questions, Answered

We believe informed families make the best decisions. Here are some common questions we hear from families, with clear answers about senior living options and the CareMATRIX placement process to guide your next step.

Our Free Placement Process

Why CareMATRIX is Free for Families

How can you help me find the right level of care placement?

We keep the process simple and supportive! Start with our consultation form or call for a consult. A CareMATRIX advisor learns your needs and budget then meets you to assess care and review finances. We share best fit matches with pricing, availability, tour with you as your advocate, and help with admissions and move in. The process is simple and personalized. We start with a phone consult to learn needs, preferences, and budget, then meet in person to confirm care priorities. Next we share a curated shortlist of best fit communities, coordinate tours, answer questions, and guide you through admissions and move in. We stay by your side too.

How does a CareMATRIX advisor assess the right level of care needed?

We confirm the right level of care before you tour. Your CareMATRIX advisor reviews daily routines, safety risks, mobility, medication support, and cognitive changes, then matches you with communities equipped for those needs now and as they evolve. This saves time, reduces stress, and helps you avoid touring options that are not appropriate.

If your placement service is free, how does CareMATRIX get paid?

Our senior placement service is 100% free for families! CareMATRIX receives a modest referral fee from the senior living community you choose and does not accept bonuses or finder’s fees. You get expert, unbiased guidance focused solely on the best care solution, with no hidden fees or obligation. Fit first. Never quotas.

Why not do this process on our own?

Most families can research online, but sorting options into a true right fit decision takes more than online research. A CareMATRIX advisor gets to know your loved one personally, including daily routines, preferences, budget, and what matters most. We then narrow options to communities that truly align, confirm availability, and join tours to keep the visit focused on your priorities, capture key details, and ask the questions that prevent surprises. This reduces trial and error, helps you choose the right fit the first time, and supports you through admissions, move in, and next steps as needs change.

What types of senior living options do you cover?

We cover the full range of senior living options, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care for Alzheimer’s or dementia, Residential Care Homes, and Skilled Nursing. Your CareMATRIX advisor explains the differences, confirms the right level of care, and recommends best fit options for your needs and budget.

Will we be pressured or obligated to choose a community?

Not at all! Our service is always pressure-free and comes with no obligation. You remain in control of all decisions. We present carefully vetted options and support you through the search, but you are never required to select any particular community. Take things at your own pace. We’re here to help, not to pressure you.

Can CareMATRIX help if we’re not sure what we need?

Yes. You do not need all the answers. Our free assessment clarifies the right level of care for your loved one, even if the best next step is not moving right now. We provide honest guidance based on needs, safety, and budget, then recommend only best fit options if senior living is appropriate. We meet you where you are.

What happens after we choose a community?

After you choose a community, we help with admissions from start to finish, including paperwork, coordination, and move in planning. We can connect you with resources to support the transition. After move in, CareMATRIX follows up to ensure your loved one is settling well and to address any needs that arise, as needed, too.

Can you still help if a placement isn’t the best fit right now?

Yes. We are committed beyond placement. If your needs do not align with our services right now, we can still connect you to trusted local resources such as home care, rehabilitation, hospice, and benefits guidance for VA or Medicaid. We also stay available as needs change. Our guidance remains free. Your well being matters.

Understanding Care Types

Housing Care Types & Key Differences

Independent Living

Is Independent Living considered care?

Independent Living is not medical care. It is for active seniors who want a maintenance free lifestyle with meals, activities, and amenities, without daily personal care help. Some communities offer optional third party services if needs change, but the base setting is lifestyle focused, not clinical. We clarify it for you.

What are the entrance fee requirements for Independent Living?

Independent Living costs vary across Omaha and Lincoln. Some communities are rental with no entrance fee, while others, often CCRCs, require a significant upfront entrance fee that may be partially refundable. We review your financials early and only present options that fit your budget and goals so there are no surprises.

How do I know if Independent Living is the right fit?

Independent Living is often a good match when daily life feels weighed down by home upkeep or long quiet days, but there is no need for hands-on help with personal care. It is ideal for seniors who are still managing their own medications and daily routines, yet want fewer chores, more social connection, and the peace of mind of staff on site.

What is usually included in most independent Living communities?

Most Independent Living communities offer private apartments or cottages, with services designed to simplify life: maintenance free living, housekeeping, flexible meal plans, on site activities, fitness and wellness programs, and scheduled transportation. Many also provide 24 hour security or staff presence for added reassurance, while residents continue to live independently without daily personal care services. Your CareMATRIX advisor will review what is included at each community so you can compare lifestyle, amenities, and support side by side.

What happens if care needs change after moving into Independent Living?

Care needs can change, and you should not have to navigate it alone. Many Independent Living communities are part of a campus or partner with Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Skilled Nursing. If needs increase, your CareMATRIX advisor reviews what your community can provide, arranges new tours, and supports the transition.

Assisted Living

How do Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing differ?

Assisted Living helps with daily tasks, meals and medications in social setting. Memory Care adds secure dementia support, structure and higher supervision. Skilled Nursing provides 24/7 licensed nursing, medical oversight, and rehab. Unsure? Call CareMATRIX for a free assessment. We tour with you and ask key questions too.

What amenities are typically included in the base rate for Assisted Living?

Amenities vary by community, but most Assisted Living base rates include three daily meals, utilities except phone and cable, housekeeping, laundry, 24 hour staffing, and a full activity calendar. Personal care services like bathing help or medication management are usually tiered and added based on need. We clarify costs.

What specialized training do Memory Care staff receive?

Our vetted Memory Care partners ensure team members receive specialized dementia training, including communication strategies, behavior support, and safety practices. The goal is a secure, predictable setting that reduces anxiety and promotes engagement through structured routines and purposeful programs. We verify it, too.

Memory Care

How do Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing differ?

Skilled Nursing provides 24/7 licensed nursing, medical oversight, and rehab. Unsure? Call CareMATRIX for a free assessment. We tour with you and ask key questions too.

Skilled Nursing

How does skilled nursing differ from assisted living and memory care?

Skilled nursing care is a clinical, licensed level of residential care designed for people who need constant medical supervision, rehabilitation and skilled treatments. Skilled nursing facilities provide 24 hour nursing support from licensed nurses and therapists, along with physician oversight, rehabilitation therapies and assistance with medications, wound care and other clinical needs. Assisted living provides long term housing and help with daily activities, whereas skilled nursing is typically short term and focuses on recovery or managing complex medical conditions. Memory care is tailored for dementia and Alzheimer’s residents; skilled nursing is for rehabilitation or chronic physical illnesses.

When should someone consider skilled nursing for their loved one?

Skilled nursing becomes appropriate when a senior needs 24 hour medical supervision or complex treatments that family or assisted living cannot provide. Examples include requiring assistance all day, help transferring, difficulty eating, complicated wound dressings, catheters or daily injections. Doctors often prescribe skilled nursing after surgery, stroke or when chronic conditions worsen.

What services are provided in a skilled nursing community?

Skilled nursing facilities provide nursing care, 24 hour supervision, three meals a day and help with everyday activities. Licensed nurses coordinate medications, IV therapy, wound treatments and vital sign monitoring; physicians oversee individualized care plans. Residents also receive rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy.

How do CareMATRIX advisors guide seniors to right skilled nursing?

CareMATRIX advisors start by learning about your loved one’s care needs and goals. They explain when skilled nursing is appropriate and curate a short list of licensed communities that match those needs. Advisors arrange and attend each tour, share insights on staffing, therapy programs and coverage, answer questions about costs, and remain advocates throughout the transition, all at no cost to your family.

Respite Care

How far in advance do I need to arrange respite?

Extra time is always helpful, especially because some communities prefer a few weeks’ notice. That said, we know life does not always give advance warning. CareMATRIX advisors regularly secure respite stays with just a few days’ notice. Whether it is planned or urgent, we will move quickly to find safe, appropriate options.

Is there a minimum or maximum stay for respite?

Respite can look different for each family. For overnight or short-term stays in a senior living community, many places ask for a minimum stay of about 5 to 7 days, and some allow short stays that extend for several weeks. For daytime-only respite, often called adult day services or adult day programs, your loved one usually attends for part of the day or full days on a regular schedule while you are at work or handling other responsibilities. Because every community and program sets its own guidelines, your CareMATRIX advisor will explain the minimums, maximums, and scheduling options for each choice so you can select the plan that fits your routine and your loved one’s needs.

How much does respite care cost?

Respite is usually billed at a daily or weekly rate and varies by community, level of care, apartment type, and length of stay. Many rates include the furnished apartment, meals, and support with daily needs, and some communities may add a short-stay or assessment fee. Your CareMATRIX advisor will outline the full cost for each option, explain what is and is not included, and help you compare choices so you can find a good fit for your budget. There is never a charge to work with CareMATRIX; our guidance is provided at no cost to you.

What else can CareMATRIX help with besides respite care?

CareMATRIX advisors support the full journey, not just respite stays. If we discover that overnight or short-term respite is not the only need, we can also explore assisted living, memory care, and independent living, or connect you with trusted in-home care, adult day programs, rehabilitation, and hospice partners. We can point you to resources for VA and Medicaid benefits and remain available as needs change. Our guidance is always provided at no cost to you.
